Apple Updates and Update Issues

External mirrored display bug with Mac OS X 10.6.3

Mac OS X 10.6.3 has a bug when mirroring the primary display to an external display, where if you use an application to play video full screen, the graphics on both displays may become garbled.  This has been noted to affect some MacBooks, MacBook Pros, and iMacs.  When this occurs, the Mac must be rebooted.  Apple is aware of the problem, and is working on a fix.  Until then, workarounds include using extended Desktop mode for external displays (not mirrored), or reverting to Mac OS X 10.6.2.

New v1.1 Mac OS X 10.6.3 Combo Updater

Apple has updated the Mac OS X 10.6.3 Combo Updater to version v1.1.  Unfortunately Apple hasn’t disclosed what has changed, but from what I can piece together this addresses issues with updating directly from Mac OS X 10.6.0 to Mac OS X 10.6.3.  Regardless, as with all combo updaters, it does not hurt anything to reapply the Mac OS X 10.6.3 v1.1 Combo Updater on top of Mac OS X 10.6.3 if you are experiencing any odd problems after... especially if you updated from Mac OS X 10.6.0 prior to the release of this new v1.1 combo updater. http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1017

iMovie '09 crashes after updating to Mac OS X 10.6.3

According to Apple Knowledgebase article TS3310, after updating to Mac OS X 10.6.3, some Macs may experience iMovie ’09 unexpected quits when scrolling through the Titles pane.  This is due to a bug with the Far Far Away title option (Star Wars style letters going off into the background).  Apple’s workaround is to avoid opening or scrolling the Titles pane in a way that reveals the Far Far Away title, or to revert to Mac OS X 10.6.2. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3310

New Adobe InDesign and InCopy CS4 updates are available

Adobe has released an InDesign CS4 6.0.5 update and a InCopy CS4 6.0.5 update.  Both fix problems with graphic import/exports, printing, text handling, links performance, and INX files.

SMC firmware update can make some iMac fans run full speed

According to Apple Knowledgebase article TS3334, after applying the iMac SMC Firmware Update 1.0, some late 2009 model 27” iMacs may experience a problem where their fans continually run at full speed.  Their fix is the reapply the iMac SMC Firmware Update 1.0 again, and if that doesn’t correct the problem to have the iMac serviced by Apple. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3334
